Spain
There has always been a story that some of our family from Grandma Sally's side is from Spain, which was why we had the light skin and Sally had blue eyes. But I looked for a long time and could not find the person who was rumored to be the Spaniard, Maria Something-German, who was Sally's grandmother.
So to bring you up to date, I had my DNA done at 23 & Me about a year ago. I wanted to know what my genetic makeup was, and how much was going to be Spanish. So I turned out to be about 53% European (the Spanish would make sense here), 40% Native American and East Asian (Mexicans are Europeans mixed with Native Americans), and 4.8% Sub-saharan African! Yes, that is why I am such a good dancer!
Anyway, 53% European is high for a one-relative Spanish ancestor, even with the Mexican Mix. So there must be more European, right?
I went back to Ancestry.com (23&Me and Ancestry.com do not speak to each other. Each wants to make money on their products so in order to enter my DNA information into my Ancestry.com account I have to either do an Ancestry.com DNA test, or enter it manually. (I am doing both).
23 and Me gives your "hits" of "DNA Relatives", most of whom are 1st to 4th cousins at this point, who match to me by percentage of DNA shared. Its all very scientific, but they give names of the ones who have consented to share names with their DNA matches. I got over 1500 hits, and am just getting started contacting them and matching them to my Ancestry.com tree! This is a lot of folks. It will take some time.
But, what I wanted to say in this post was this, Ancestry.com has done a lot of updating, and I have found the Spaniards! I have found a lot of them! There are at least 6 generations of spanish relatives from Granma Sally's side of the family! Not only that, but the database now can trace my lineage back 12 generations (to my 12th great grandparents in Spain) to the year 1700! So far.... I am so excited this is super fun. If anyone wants to get in on this, let me know and I can share the account with you. Its fascinating. What is helping a lot is that there are others who have traced their lineage back so far, and I can just link up to them. We are related, after all, and share these ancestors. Some of them have photos and other stories, I just have not had time to look at all of them yet.
So, until I get my Ancestry.com DNA results back, I will still work off of the 23&Me results. We have tons of relatives all over Texas, California, New Mexico, Spain, and Canary Islands. I am looking forward to working this as far back as I can on all of the branches. I will update the posts when I can. Enjoy reading and I will post a link to the ancestry tree.
Awesome
ReplyDeleteYeah Cuz, it took a minute, but they are there, not only that, they are conquistadors! There is a lot to read still... let me know if you want the tree link.
DeleteAnna-Maria Koenig is Guadalupe Sanchez's (your grandpa Gabriel's 1st wife) grandmother. Gabriel is my great grandfather from Guadalupe's side so we're half cousins.
