The Mystery of Maria Nicanora Ramirez

Maria Nicanora Ramirez Flores Guererro (Grandma Sallie's mom) was born 10 Jan 1884 in El Lucero, TX. Brief research shows that it is really a "tract" or grant made to some ranchers near Encino, TX in Brooks County (near the Rio Grande).

One of the mysteries of Maria comes from the fact that one database shows Maria Nicandra Ramirez, b. 10 Jan 1886 was baptised in Asuncion, Donato Guerra, Mex. Her parents are listed as Francisco Ramirez and Maria De Jesus from Mexico. BUT, I found a notation of her death in the Family Search database (a geneology database) that lists her parents as Marcario Ramirez and Petra Estimbelda. Mystery #1: Who were her parents?

Secondly, there is a family story that Esther relayed to Louis that Maria's mother was from Germany or Europe. That was the explanation for her blue eyes and light skin. None of Sallie's other children remembers any specifics. Angelo does remember a story about that vaguely. Emma does not recall that story. None of the names of the parents above have any European connotation. No Maria Steinberg can be found in Mexico or Texas around the time Maria would have been born. So that is mystery #2: Where was Maria's mother from?

Maria was married twice, by oral history. Once to Alberto Flores, and once to Domingo Guerrero. Alberto is the father of Nasaria or Sallie and Geronimo Flores. Once she was married to Domingo, they had a son Florentino Guerrero. In a 1920 census, Sallie and Geronimo were listed as living with their uncle Florentino and his wife Gertrudis Gabriela Flores in Hidalgo County. The family story is that Maria had "run off". By the next census in 1930, Sallie and Geronimo lived in Ft. Bend County (Rosenberg) TX with Maria, Domingo, and their little brother Florentino Guererro. They were all listed as last name Guererro at this time. Mystery #3, where and why did Maria leave the kids with her brother?

If any family member knows of any clues to the mysteries, let us know. We will do more research on Maria Ramirez Flores Guerrero. We need more photos of her also, this is the only one I have so far.
